Review Salt Don't Go In Tea 2
Oh my goodness, where do I even begin with "Salt Don't Go In Tea 2: An African American Romance: The Finale"? This book, the entire series really, has been such a ride! I went in expecting a good time based on the first book, and J. Dominique absolutely delivered. The emotional rollercoaster was real, and I found myself completely invested in Amari and Yara's journeys. I felt their pain, their triumphs, and even their questionable choices with a surprising level of empathy. Dominique has a real knack for creating characters you connect with, even when they're making less-than-stellar decisions. You find yourself rooting for them, even when you know they might be screwing things up!
The drama in this finale was next level. Betrayal, heartbreak, and moments of pure, unadulterated joy – it was a perfect blend of all the things that make a romance captivating. I particularly loved how the author explored the complexities of friendship and love; how those bonds can be tested to their limits and yet, sometimes, miraculously endure. The author really delves into the scars left by betrayal and the difficult work of rebuilding trust, which made the journey all the more powerful.
While Amari getting her happy ending was definitely satisfying (she deserved it!), I'll admit I shared the sentiment of some readers who felt Koi could have gotten a bit more... karma. Her actions were truly despicable, and a more impactful consequence would have felt more fitting. However, it didn't detract too much from the overall experience for me. The book was filled with so many other compelling moments, and the overall arc of the story felt complete.
Now, Yara and Saint... their story felt a little more bittersweet. I completely understand the readers who longed for a new love interest for Yara. Saint's consistent failings certainly tested my patience, and while the author showcases the effort he makes toward reconciliation, some might feel it wasn't quite enough. Their storyline highlights the messy reality of relationships and the agonizing decisions one has to make when faced with repeated failings. This realistic portrayal, while potentially frustrating for some, actually added to the story’s depth and authenticity. It's not always a happily ever after wrapped in a neat bow, and that's okay.
One thing I truly appreciated was the author's ability to balance the heavy emotional moments with lighter, humorous ones. There were definitely laugh-out-loud moments throughout the book, offering much-needed relief from the intensity of the drama. This contrast made the emotional highs and lows even more impactful.
Ultimately, "Salt Don't Go In Tea 2" is a strong conclusion to a compelling series. While some minor quibbles exist regarding certain character resolutions, the book is a well-written, engaging, and emotionally resonant read. J. Dominique's writing style is captivating, and her ability to build characters and relationships that stay with you long after you finish the last page is commendable. I eagerly anticipate her next project.
